 LEATHER AND ITS NATURAL CHARACTERISTICS

Real Leather is a natural product. It breathes,is warm and has individual characteristics which makes each hide unique and as such means that each product made of leather is unique in its own way.

Leather will always bear the marks of its natural origin and these can be in the form of healed scars, growth marks, blemishes, hair pore structure or other markings but should all be considered as natural beauty marks. They are signs which owners cherish when buying leather and in no way detract from the quality and beauty of the leather.

Leather is one of the oldest goods known to mankind as it can be traced back to the Paleolithic period which is about 2.5 million years ago. It is likely to be one of the first natural materials which was chemically modified by man so as to preserve its use. Leather is the most ancient form of clothing known to man and it is has now found a very important permanent place in todays fashion working its way into everything from shoes, handbags and purses to trousers, coats and gloves.

Leather is created through the tanning of hides and skins. The tanning process converts the skin into a durable, long lasting and versatile natural material for various uses throughout many different industries.

Any of the natural characteristics which remain in the leather after tanning are all part of the natural appeal of the leather and should be enjoyed.

 CARING FOR YOUR LEATHER

It is very important that you identify the type of leather you are cleaning before you put any product on it. The main types of leather used in accessories and handbags are Pigmented, Semi Aniline, Suede and Nubuck. If you have any doubt consult your retailer as there are different treatments for different leathers.

By using specialised leather products they should clean and protect the leather without damaging the surface. Only use products designed for use on leather, DO NOT use household cleaning products as they may damage the finish and may it irrepairable.

Always follow the manufacturers recommendations on any cleaning or protection product.

Always test any product on an in an inconspicuous area first to see how the leather reacts to the product.

Do not use direct heat to dry the leather, let it dry naturally.

For Suede and Nubuck leathers use a soft suede brush gently on the surface.

For pigmented leathers dust with a soft cloth or brush. A slightly damp cloth can be used on the surface. Do not rub hard on the leather surface as it will only push dirt deeper into the leather.

The above are recommendations only. Mala Leather Ltd does not endorse any particular product or will not offer advice on any particular brand.
